Summer 2010 Music Round Up
As the years go by, and my music collections expand, it’s common for me to hear a song and think to myself…”Wow, that song totally takes me back to the summer of <enter year here>.” This seems to happen in the fall/winter as well, but summer has a vibe much different than those seasons. This post is dedicated to the songs of the summer of 2010 which I think may have that affect on me a few years down the road.
Drive-By Truckers – Sante Fe
Probably my favorite track off of The Big Todo. When Patterson gets a song right, he really nails it. This is one of those times. This record was a big part of my early summer, as I got to see The Truckers up close and personal at The Bottle & Cork in Dewey Beach, DE in early June.
Gorillaz – Stylo
I’ve been a casual fan of Gorillaz ever since their first record, and when I read that their new single was going to feature one of my all-time favorite soul artists, Bobby Womack, I was really looking forward to hearing the sound. Bobby voice sounds better than ever, and the song is altogether unique and fun. The video is equally awesome.
Grace Potter and The Nocturnals – Hot Summer Night
I think I enjoyed another single from this record better, Tiny Light, but this song just totally blows me away whenever I hear it. Powerful vocals, and something you don’t hear very often anymore – a straight-forward rock and roll song. Every time I hear it I think to myself, “This girl could probably kick my ass.”
Dr. Dog – Where Did All the Time Go
A great summer song by local (Philly) favorites Dr .Dog. I love the background vocals throughout, and how can you resist a lyric like, “She gets dressed up like a pillow, so she’s always in bed.”
Vampire Weekend – Giving Up the Gun
I’m not a huge Vampire Weekend fan. Mostly I can take them or leave them. But this is a great single. I feel like on some of their other singles they try to hard, but this one flows just right. I love the whole vibe of the song along with the lyrics.
Avi Buffalo - What’s In It For
I loved this song the first time I heard it. It’s instantly catchy chorus, breezy guitar runs along with the singer’s high pitched voice made it an instant summer song for me.
The New Pornographers – Valkyrie in the Roller Disco
There are so many track on the this record that I love. Basically every New Pornographers record becomes a summer staple for me. This is probably my favorite song of the bunch. I love the shared vocals between Neko Case and Carl Newman. I love how the piano and guitar work together. Add in the message of the song, to stay out and enjoy oneself, and it’s just about the perfect summer song.
The National – Afraid of Everyone
This whole record is great, but this song stood out in particular to me. It builds up perfectly to the final disturbing stuttering crescendo.
LCD Soundsystem – I Can Change
Musically for me, this is Erotic City v2.0. It’s so much fun. A great song about the game of love.
The Black Keys – Next Girl
And speaking of love, no summer song list is complete without an “Eff Off!” song. Next Girl by the Black Keys is by far the best kiss off song of the summer. These sentiments have been sung thousands of times, but there is something about this track that sounds so fresh and modern.
